St. John’s Falls in Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic Finale to Tennessee, 3-0

Erin Jones and Kendall White named to All-Tournament Team
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball program finished the 2025 Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic with a 2-2 record, following a loss to Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, 3-0. Senior Erin Jones and freshman Kendall White represented the Johnnies on the nine-player All-Tournament Team.
The Red Storm (2-8, 0-0 BIG EAST), finished third in their lone home tournament of the 2025 campaign. The Lady Vols (7-1, 0-0 SEC) featured a high-powered offense that committed only eight attacking errors throughout the match. The scores of the sets were 25-11, 25-12 and 25-16.
Jones finishes the tournament averaging 3.23 kills per set, 3.69 assists per set and 2.46 digs per set. The Albuquerque, N.M., native also secured two triple-doubles in wins over Marist on Friday afternoon and Delaware St. on Saturday afternoon. White wrapped up the tournament with 21 total kills and five total blocks. The Peachtree Corners, Ga., native had a career high seven kills in a win against Delaware St.
Seven different Johnnies recorded kills against Tennessee, with Jones pacing the offense with six. Martina Capponcelli logged 16 assists and Rashanny Solano Smith recorded a game-high nine digs.
The first set began with both sides exchanging points to 3-3, but a 5-1 Tennessee run was enough for the Red Storm to take their first timeout. St. John's grabbed the next few points out of the timeout on kills from Jones and Chloe Bell, pulling to within two, 9-7. Another back-and-forth stretch followed to 13-9, but the Lady Vols rattled off eight unanswered points as the lead grew. After a service error, the visitors would end the set on a 4-1 run and secured the first set, 25-11.
The Red Storm took the first point of the second frame on a kill from Jones, her fifth of the match. Tennessee responded with another 5-1 run, but a Bell block and White kill cut the lead to one, 5-4. The Lady Vols went on another double-digit run to grow the lead, forcing St. John's to call a timeout at 16-6. The visitors held onto the led and closed the second frame, 25-12.
Tennessee jumped out to an early 8-2 lead to start the third stanza. The margin would grow to as many as seven at 13-6, but the Red Storm used a 3-0 run to cut into the lead, forcing the visitors to take their first timeout. Teams would go point-for-point after 16-10. The home team went on a small 3-0 run capped with a block assist from White and Ludovica Zola but the Lady Vols lead held up securing the match with a 25-16.
The rest of the All-Tournament team will be announced following the conclusion of the West Virginia and Delaware St. match at 4 p.m.
St. John's will hit the road and travel north to Syracuse, N.Y. Head Coach Joanne Persico and her squad will play three games in two days during the Syracuse Invitational from Sept. 19 – 20. On Friday, they face Le Moyne with first serve at 6 p.m. The following day features contests against Siena at 11 a.m. and Syracuse at 6 p.m.
