Jones collects double-double and Parker sets career-high nine kills
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team won its first match of the Syracuse Invitational over Le Moyne in the Women's Building on Friday afternoon, 3-0.
The Red Storm (3-8, 0-0 BIG EAST) used a team total of eight service aces to propel the offense. Senior Erin Jones notched her third double-double of the season with a line of 13 kills and 14 assists, as the Johnnies had six different players record kills. The scores of the sets were 25-21, 25-15 and 25-17.
Jones led the Red Storm with 13 kills and redshirt-freshman Ella Parker set a new career-high nine kills. Martina Capponcelli paced the offense with 14 assists. On the defensive side of the net, Rashanny Solano Smith dug up 11 balls and Chloe Bell had 1.5 total blocks.
Head Coach Joanne Persico was satisfied with her teams performance saying "We had a great result from our young squad, led by Rashanny in the back court."
In the first set, Parker came out swinging for the Johnnies. After exchanging points to 6-4, she collected five kills to help fuel a 9-4 run into the media timeout at 15-8. Le Moyne would go on a run of their own and cut the lead down to two at 17-15, forcing a St. John's timeout. The stoppage wasn't enough to slow down the Dolphins as they leveled the score 19-19. However, St. John's rattled off a 3-1 run capped by Parker's sixth kill of the afternoon and caused the Dolphins to burn their final timeout, 22-20. In the end, the Red Storm took the first set, 25-21.
To start the second stanza, Jones got the visitors on the board with a quick kill. After trading points, Parker stepped up to the service line and fired back-to-back service aces to grow the lead at 6-2. Le Moyne applied pressure and cut the lead to one at 7-6. As another back-and-forth ensued, St. John's was able to put some distance on the home team until the media timeout at 15-9. Kills from Parker and Jones allowed the lead to bubble to as many as nine at 19-10. The Dolphins trimmed the lead with four unanswered points, but a series of attack errors gave the visitors the edge to take the second set, 25-15.
Both squads went back-and-forth to begin the third frame, but two Shiloh Clayton aces gave St. John's an early advantage 6-2. Blocks from Kya Harris and Lucrezia Lodi helped the visitors to increase their lead, 7-4. The Red Storm took a sizable lead into the final media timeout, 15-10. After the stoppage the Johnnies seven-point edge was enough for Le Moyne to call its first timeout of the set, 21-14. The stoppage wasn't enough to halt the Red Storm as they took the third frame 25-17 to complete the sweep.
St. John's returns to action tomorrow for two matches in the Women's Building. The first match against Siena is set for 11 a.m. The team concludes the tournament at 6 p.m. as they square off against Persico's alma mater, Syracuse.
