St. John’s Closes Out Day One at UConn Invitational at GreatHorse

Red Storm sit in eighth place after opening round
HAMPDEN, Mass. – The St. John's Men's Golf team closed out the opening round at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse, taking eighth place after 18 holes on Sunday.
The Red Storm shot 13-over, 301, during the opening round to sit in the middle of the standings in the 15-team field. The leaderboard is tight as second and 11th place are separated by 10 strokes. The hosts, UConn check in at the top of the field after carding an even par, 288.
A pair of underclassmen guided the Johnnies' efforts in Hampden, Mass., placing inside the top-20 after round. Matthew DiFioreshot a 2-over, 74, to tie for a team-best on Sunday sitting in 19th place. The freshman was one of two players to record an eagle finishing out the 563-yard par-5 eighth hole in three strokes.
Joseph Dolezal is tied with DiFiore in 19th place after matching the team-low 2-over, 74, through the initial 18 holes. The Long Island native recorded 13 pars and two birdies, including one on the 18th hole at GreatHorse.
Max McColgan shot 4-over, 76, in his second collegiate tournament and checks in tied for 38th overall. Veteran David Mlynek andEli Weidmann cared a 5-over, 77, to tie for 42nd place in the 84-golfer field.
The second of three rounds will tee off tomorrow morning as St. John's will begin play at 8:30 a.m. Live results throughout the tournament will be available on SCOREBOARD.
