Jeremy Sharp’s Equalizer Leads St. John’s to Tie No. 2 Marshall, 1-1

Red Storm earn highest ranked result in 17 years
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's Men's Soccer team recorded a draw with a top-five ranked opponent on Friday night as Jeremy Sharp fired in the equalizer 18:35 remaining to tie No. 2 Marshall, 1-1.
Friday night's draw marked the highest ranked result for the Red Storm since it tied with then-No. 2 Boston College on Sept. 7, 2008. The Johnnies logged two consecutive results against top-five teams after tying then-No. 5 Wake Forest on Sunday.
Sharp recorded the equalizer in the 72nd minute to knot the score at 1-1, marking the senior's first goal since Oct. 6, 2023 when he logged his first-ever tally at Wisconsin while playing for Michigan State. Igor Goncalves logged the helper on Sharp's game-tying goal.
The Red Storm outshot Marshall, 11-7, and held a sizeable advantage in corner kicks, 8-2. Sharp and Goncalves tied for the game-high with three shots apiece.
A physical contest as there were 37 fouls between the two sides as 10 yellow cards and one straight red card were issued, all in the second half. St. John's played a man-up for the final 18:45 of the contest.
After no shots were recorded for the opening 25 minutes by either side. As the game began to open up, the Johnnies created an opportunity in the 28th minute. Ivar Nå Aga found Sharp as the senior rocketed a strike toward lower left corner but the drive was knocked away by Marshall's goalkeeper Dan Rose.
The opportunities kept coming off a corner kick service from Sharp. After the ball was tapped in off a header and bounced around the box, Xavi Abeijon directed a ball towards the net before it was smothered by Rose.
The Red Storm continued to dial up the attacking pressure and carried a 2-1 advantage heading into the halftime break.
In the latter 45 minutes, the Johnnies generated another opportunity as Igor Goncalves had a look on net off a volley as the ball escaped the box after a corner. The junior's strike bounced off a Thundering Herd defender and over the crossbar.
Marshall got on the board in the 53rd minute after Larry Noel diced through the defense and buried a strike in the bottom right-side of the net to jump ahead, 1-0.
The Red Storm immediately responded with a chance off the corner as Na Aga tilted a header towards the goalmouth before it was cleared off the line by Marshall.
After a Thundering Herd straight red card was issued to put the Red Storm up a man for the final 18:45. On the ensuing free kick that was played short, Julian Jakopovic swung in a cross. A Marshall defender attempted to clear with a header but the 50/50 ball was one in the air by Goncalves as he redirected to Sharp. The Michigan State transfer unloaded a one-timed strike that flew into the bottom left corner of the twine to knot the score, 1-1, sending the crowd of 1,182 on hand into a roar.
The Thundering Herd launched a long-range strike from 35 yards out off the foot of Noel soared over the goalkeeper and rung off the crossbar in the 78th minute.
As the intensity on the pitch began to grow and the final minutes ticked off the clock, Kaief Tomlinson played a ball in that bounced inside the box onto the head of a streaking Guilherme Gomes. The reigning TopDrawer Soccer National Player of the Week poked it into the net but was called offside. After a video review, the call stood as the game remained level with 1:18 to play.
The Thundering Herd delivered the final opportunity off a free kick as Joao Roberto tested Red Storm goalkeeper Alec McLachlanbut to no avail, as he stopped the last-second attempt in its tracks. The clock ran out as St. John's and Marshall tied by the same scoreline in consecutive seasons in the first two meetings between the storied programs.
St. John's will be back in action on Monday night at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium when it welcomes Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. contest.
