Johnnies bounce back to move to 1–1 on the year
FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The St. John's women's tennis team rebounded on Sunday morning recording a 6–1 victory over Miami (Ohio) at the FGCU Tennis Complex, improving to 1–1 on the season.
Nicoline Sartz-Lunde and Nao Kojima set the tone early, opening the match with a commanding 6–1 victory on the No. 2 doubles court. St. John's secured the doubles point shortly thereafter, as captain Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman delivered a dominant performance on the No. 3 court, 6-1, defeating Miami Ohio's pairing of Avery Voss and Maria Komar.
Kojima carried her momentum into singles play, cruising past Avery Voss in straight sets, 6–3, 6–1, to extend St. John's lead to 2–0 over the RedHawks.
Gomez extended the Red Storm's lead to 3–0 on the No. 6 court, battling past Lovisa Valentinsson in a hard-fought three-set match, 1–6, 6–2, 6–2.
After Miami (Ohio) earned a point on the No. 1 court to cut the margin to 3–1, Charlotta Buss sealed the win for St. John's on the No. 5 court, defeating Nina Chavez in straight sets, 6–1, 7–5.
Noemi Babikova and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde added the final points of the match with victories on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts, respectively, as St. John's secured a 6–1 final score and its first win of the season.
The Red Storm return to Queens on Jan. 30 to face Fairfield at the USTA National Tennis Center.
