With a win on Tuesday, Head Coach Rick Pitino would record his 899th career on-court collegiate victory, tying Bob Knight for fourth all-time in NCAA Division I Men's Basketball wins list.
On Monday, St. John's (13-5, 6-1 BIG EAST) re-entered the USA Today Coaches Poll checking in at no. 25 after another 2-0 week. It marked the 10th time in 13 weeks the Johnnies have been included in the poll. In the Associated Press poll, the Red Storm was the first team out tying for 26th with Wisconsin.
After Saturday night's 86-79 victory at RV/RV Villanova in Philadelphia, St. John's racked up its fourth-straight victory and sixth in its last seven outings. The Red Storm sit in sole possession of second place in the BIG EAST standings with a 6-1 mark to begin league play.
Leading by one at halftime, the Johnnies orchestrated a 20-4 scoring run and then fended off a late Wildcats comeback bid to secure a victory at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Dating back to last season, the Red Storm has won seven-straight BIG EAST regular season road games, tied for the longest streak by one of the league's teams since Villanova won 13 in a row from Jan. 31, 2015 to Feb. 9, 2016.
Zuby Ejiofor was recognized by the league office for the third consecutive week landing on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. The Garland, Texas native averaged 19.5 points on 65.2% (15-23) shooting and 7.0 rebounds per game during a pair of wins over Marquette and Villanova. Ejiofor has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week or the league's weekly honor roll six times this season, which ties Butler's Michael Ajayi for the most in the conference. The team captain has registered eight consecutive double-figure scoring outings and is posting 19.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game during conference play.
Fellow frontcourt starters Bryce Hopkins and Dillon Mitchell have made a sizeable impact as of late. Mitchell added his second double-double of the season at Villanova and Hopkins is logging 15.3 points and 5.5 boards per game over the last four contests. The Providence transfer scored a team-high 20 points on Saturday.
Two keys to the Red Storm's win streak have been efficient shooting and ball security. Over the last four games, the Johnnies have shot over 50% from field goal range and are 10-0 when reaching that mark this season. During that span that included three road games, St. John's is averaging just 8.0 turnovers per game, including three single-digit giveaway totals.
Seton Hall (14-4, 4-3 BIG EAST) will cross state lines to meet the Red Storm in the 116th all-time contest in a series that dates back to 1909. The Johnnies have taken three straight and in the last meeting, clinched their first outright BIG EAST Regular Season title since 1984-85 in a 71-61 triumph on March 1 at Madison Square Garden.
After cracking the Associated Press Top 25 last week, the Pirates fell out of the rankings after falling at home to No. 3 UConn and Butler. Seton Hall started the 2025-26 campaign 11-1 but have since dropped three of its last six games.
Led by Shaheen Holloway, this Pirates team has been stifling defensively ranking eighth in NCAA Division I in scoring defense limiting opponents to 63.8 points. Seton Hall also ranks 10th in blocks per game (5.8) and 16th in steals per game (9.6).
Following Tuesday's title at MSG, St. John's will hit the road to take on Xavier, as Rick Pitino's squad will face his son, Richard's Musketeers on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on TNT/truTV.
