QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team dropped its first decision of BIG EAST play on Saturday night, falling to No. 3 Georgetown, 3-0, at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm (5-5-1, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) played level with the third-ranked Hoyas (10-1-1, 4-0-0 BIG EAST) for more than 55 minutes before Georgetown broke the game open in the second half.
Georgetown, which entered the night ranked no. 1 in the RPI, outshot the Red Storm by a 15-7 margin, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Hoyas earned six corners to the Johnnies' two.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nico Bezama made two saves for the Red Storm.
Freshman midfielder Ander Gonzalez recorded four of the Red Storm's seven shots, two of which were on goal. Luca Fargnoli, Scott Wilhelmsen and Travis Thompson also registered shots for St. John's.
Georgetown enjoyed an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half, but the Red Storm hung tough, keeping the Hoyas off the board and spending a significant amount of time in the attacking third.
The Red Storm nearly jumped in front in the 47th minute, when Gonzalez sent a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that was tracking to the top-left corner of the cage before Georgetown keeper Charlie DeMarco corralled it. DeMarco, a New York native, made three saves for the Hoyas to record his fifth shutout of the campaign.
Less than 10 minutes later, Georgetown opened scoring when Mitchell Baker headed home a corner kick from David Urrutia.
Five minutes after getting on the board, the Hoyas struck again, as Tate Lampman cleaned up a chaotic situation in front, flicking it home and putting Georgetown on top, 2-0.
The Hoyas added on one final tally in the 85th minute, as Terrance Reynolds scored off an assist from Matthew Van Horn, his second helper of the night.
The Red Storm, one point out of second place in the BIG EAST's East Division standings, will return to action on Friday night when it heads to Chicago for a 4 p.m. ET contest with the DePaul Blue Demons on ESPN+.
