Three BIG EAST points will be up for grabs in The Windy City
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will return to action with a crucial BIG EAST road match at DePaul on Friday afternoon. Kick-off from Wish Field is set for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
The Johnnies approach the midway mark of conference play with a 5-5-1 record, including a 1-1-1 effort in conference play. The Red Storm enters the weekend third in the BIG EAST East Division standings, one point behind Seton Hall in second. The top team in each division will earn an automatic berth and a top-two seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, which begins on Nov. 12 in Boyds, Md. The remaining two teams will be chosen based on highest conference point total.
St. John's heads to Chicago following a 3-0 loss at home to No. 3 Georgetown on Saturday night. The Red Storm played level with the Hoyas, the top ranked team in the RPI, for more than 55 minutes before Georgetown tallied three late goals.
Ranked 47th in the RPI, the Red Storm is looking for its second significant road result of conference play, as the Johnnies played then-No. 4 Creighton to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 2 in Omaha.
Four of the Red Storm's five victories this season have come via the shutout. Sophomore goalkeeper Nico Bezama has played every minute between the pipes this season, ranking 66th nationally in goalie minutes played. His four clean sheets are tied for 30th in Division I.
After taking on the Blue Demons with three critical BIG EAST points on the line, St. John's will travel to Maryland for its marquee matchup of the non-conference season against the 14th-ranked Terrapins. The contest will pit the two winningest active coaches in NCAA Division I against one another in Dr. David Masur and Sasho Cirovski.
DePaul readies to host the Red Storm following its first win of conference play, a 2-1 road triumph at Connecticut on Saturday night. Noeh Hernandez tallied a goal and an assist in the win while Keagan Pace found the back of the net for the third time this season. Hernandez, a senior midfielder, leads the team with six goals and six assists for 18 points. He is tied for seventh in the BIG EAST in scoring and third in assists while 1.80 points per game rank fourth in the league.
As a team, DePaul ranks last in the league and 193rd in the nation with a 2.20 goals against average. The Blue Demons have recorded one clean sheet this season, a 3-0 win over Chicago State on Sept. 6.
St. John's and DePaul will meet for the 20th time in a series that dates back to 2005, the Blue Demons' first year in the BIG EAST.
The Red Storm is unbeaten in its last six matches against the Blue Demons with five wins during that stretch.
St. John's has not lost against DePaul at Wish Field since their first trip to the Windy City in 2006.
