McCormick netted her first career goal in the 15th minute
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The St. John's women's soccer team fell to Georgetown, 2-1, on Saturday night at Shaw Field.
The Red Storm moved to 3-6-4 overall and 0-2-3 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown improved to 4-4-4 on the season and 1-2-2 in conference action. St. John's struck first in the 15th minute to snap a three-match unbeaten streak, but the Hoyas responded with two unanswered goals, including the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 85th minute.
Kailey McCormick provided the lone goal for the Johnnies, finding the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career. The midfielder's tally marked the Red Storm's first goal in BIG EAST play and its first since the 1-0 victory over Central Connecticut State on Sept. 9. Daniela Monzon picked up her first career assist on the opening goal.
Kayla Bower registered four saves over the full 90 minutes, bringing her season total to 46. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native has posted six clean sheets, a .807 save percentage and a 0.85 goals-against average through 13 matches. Bower has now accumulated 167 saves and 10 solo shutouts across 43 career appearances for the Red Storm.
Julianna Bivona continued her consistent presence on the St. John's backline, playing all 90 minutes for the 13th consecutive contest. The defender remains the only Johnnie to play every minute this season, logging 1,170 minutes across 13 starts. Julia Lombardo, Juliana Dane, Abby Fitzmaurice and Carly Schuler also played the full 90 minutes against the Hoyas.
St. John's wasted little time making an impact offensively, breaking through in the 15th minute when Monzon connected with McCormick for the opening goal. Georgetown responded with increased pressure before Aliza Mannon leveled the contest in the 26th minute. Bower made two first-half saves to send the teams into halftime deadlocked at one.
Georgetown increased its pressure after halftime, but Bower and the Red Storm backline held firm to keep the contest even. The graduate student made two saves in the second half, including a sliding stop on Abigail Droner just in front of the net in the 66th minute. The Hoyas eventually broke through in the 85th minute when Droner converted a penalty kick to take a 2-1 advantage. Despite St. John's efforts to find a late equalizer, Georgetown held on for the victory.
The Red Storm will return home to host Marquette on Oct. 17 for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Queens.
