Six of the 11 previous matches between the teams came in the NCAA Tournament
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will play its final non-conference match of the regular season on Tuesday night when it travels to College Park to renew its series with No. 14 Maryland.
Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on B1G+.
Tuesday will be a meeting between two of the nation's most successful programs in the modern history of men's college soccer; combined, the teams have reached 18 College Cups and won five national titles. The men patrolling the sidelines in this match are numbers one and two on Division I's active career wins list: Sasho Cirovski (485) and Dr. David Masur (473).
St. John's and Maryland will meet for the 12th time in a series that dates back to 1995. Two of those previous 11 matchups have come in the national semifinals. St. John's defeated Maryland, 1-0, to punch its ticket to the 2003 national championship game, five years before the Terrapins defeated the Red Storm in double overtime at the 2008 College Cup. The Johnnies and the Terps
Overall, Maryland holds an 8-3 lead in the series history. St. John's won each of the first three matchups (1995, 1999, 2003) before Maryland kicked off an eight-game winning streak in 2004. Six of the 11 matches between St. John's and Maryland have come in the NCAA Tournament, including a stretch of four straight years from 2003-06.
The two teams last met in 2019, when Maryland scored in the 109th minute to defeat the Red Storm, 1-0, in double overtime. That season, St. John's went on to earn the no. 16 national seed in the NCAA Tournament.
St. John's is coming off its second straight road result in BIG EAST action, playing DePaul to a scoreless draw on Friday afternoon in Chicago. Two weeks earlier, the Red Storm also took a point from then-No. 4 Creighton, drawing with the high-flying Bluejays, 1-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nico Bezama earned his fifth shutout of the season on Friday afternoon at Wish Field. The West New York, N.J., native's five clean sheets are good enough for fourth in the conference and 15th nationally. As a team, the Red Storm ranks 29th nationally in shutout percentage (41.7%).
The Red Storm boasts four multi-goal scorers, led by Long Islanders Luca Fargnoli and Travis Thompson at three tallies apiece. Brage Birkelund Eie scored twice in the season opener, but is one of several Johnnies that has been hampered by injury this season. The Norwegian freshman has not played since Sept. 6. Issa Atcha Yaya is the Red Storm's other multi-goal scorer, finding the back of the net in wins over Fordham (Sept. 13) and Monmouth (Oct. 6).
Maryland welcomes the Red Storm on the heels of a 3-2 road win at Michigan on Friday night. Henry Bernstein and Ljubomir Popovic scored for the Terps before an 85th minute own goal sealed the win for Maryland.
Bernstein is the team's second-leading point producer, tallying two goals and eight assists for 10 points. The Maryland offense is anchored by freshman forward Rodrigo Neri, who leads the Terrapins with six goals in 12 goals. Fellow freshman Said El Eyssami had added five goals on the campaign.
Junior goalkeeper Laurin Mack has played every minute between the pipes this season for Maryland, posting a 1.83 goals against average and a .711 save percentage with two shutouts.
St. John's will return to BIG EAST action on Saturday, Oct. 24, when it heads to Seton Hall for a match with significant postseason implications for both sides.
