Red Storm record highest ranked result since it tied No. 3 USF on Oct. 10, 2009
OMAHA, Neb.– The St. John's men's soccer team earned an impressive 1-1 draw at No. 4 Creighton in Omaha on Friday night. The draw marked the Red Storm's highest ranked result on the road since it tied No. 3 USF in Tampa on Oct. 10, 2009.
The Johnnies (4-4-1, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) have tied three straight opponents ranked in the top-five on the United Soccer Coaches poll, dating back to draws with then No. 2 Marshall and then-No. 5 Wake Forest last season.
The St. John's backline became the third Creighton (10-0-3, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) opponent to hold the Bluejays' top ranked scoring attack to one goal or less this season. Creighton was averaging 3.25 goals per game coming into Friday night's contest at Morrison Stadium.
Travis Thompson provided the first goal of the game to give the Red Storm the lead. The junior's third tally moves him tied for the team lead. Luca Fargnoli logged the assist off a throw-in as the Long Island native now leads the team in points with seven.
Ander Gonzalez logged a team-high three shots as the Johnnies outlasted the Bluejays in shots on target, 6-4. Nico Bezama kept the high-powered Creighton attack at bay and made four saves, including a pair of crucial stops down the stretch.
After the two sides felt each other out for the opening half hour, the Red Storm struck first in the 31st minute. Luca Fargnoli tossed a long throw into the 18-yard box. Thompson quickly trapped and fired off a grounded strike into the bottom left corner of the net to give St. John's a 1-0 advantage.
In the 37th minute, the Bluejays earned a penalty kick after a video review. Matthew Reed capitalized from the spot for his 10th goal of the season. The two sides went into the locker room level, 1-1.
Early in the second half, St. John's tested Creighton's goalkeeper Matthew Hudson with a pair of looks on frame from Gonzalex and Damian Halat.
In the final minutes of the match, Bezama made two highlight-reel saves to preserve a crucial point in BIG EAST play for the Red Storm.
The Red Storm will return to Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium for the first time since Sept. 8 when it welcomes Monmouth for a 7 p.m. kick-off on ESPN+.
