Issa Atcha Yaya scores game-winner in the 68th minute
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team used a 68th minute goal from Issa Atcha Yaya to take down Monmouth, 1-0, in its final non-conference home match on Tuesday night at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
With the win, the Red Storm improved to 5-4-1 on the campaign, including a 4-1-0 mark in Queens.
Atcha Yaya's goal, his second of the season, came off assists from Ander Gonzalez and Zander Romero. It was the second assist of the year for both players.
On the game, St. John's outshot Monmouth (2-6-1) by a slim margin, 7-6, but earned eight corners to Monmouth's two.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nico Bazema recorded his fourth shutout of the year for the Red Storm. Gonzalez, Tobi Osoba, Camron Boumsong, Cayden Walton, Scott Wilhelmsen and Kaief Thompson all played the full 90 minutes in from of Bazema.
St. John's came out on the front foot, registering two shots and two corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes. The Red Storm's best chance of the early going came in the eighth minute, as Boumsong sent a blast just over the bar from the top of the 18-yard box.
Monmouth's Brendan Tansey recorded the Hawks' first shot of the game in the 38th minute, but Osoba made a skillful play to block the try and neutralize the Monmouth threat.
The Red Storm broke through in the 68th minute, as a series of deft passes helped put the Johnnies ahead 1-0. Gonzalez began the sequence by chesting down a loose ball to Romero, who quickly touched it back to Gonzalez. Gonzalez then took a 15-yard run before threading a ball through traffic to a streaking Atcha Yaya, who finished with his left foot across his body found the back of the net.
Monmouth did not go quietly, registering four of their six shots in the final 22 minutes of the contest following Atcha Yaya's eventual game winner. But the Red Storm held on, coming away with a result for the fourth time in its last five matches (3-1-1).
St. John's will return to action on Saturday with arguably its toughest test to date, welcoming No. 3 Georgetown to Queens. Kick-off from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
