Red Storm will welcome the Hawks for final non-conference game of the season in Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will play its final home non-conference match on Tuesday night when it welcomes the Monmouth Hawks to Queens. Kick-off from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ with Johnny Gadamowitz and Cam Manna the call.
The Johnnies (4-4-1, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) return home following an impressive road result on Friday night, taking a point from No. 4 Creighton with a 1-1 draw in Omaha. The tie marked the program's highest ranked road result since drawing with No. 3 USF on Oct. 10, 2009. That season, the Red Storm went on to win its eighth BIG EAST Tournament title under the direction of Dr. David Masur.
St. John's became just the third Creighton opponent this season to hold the undefeated Bluejays (10-0-3) to one goal. Creighton entered the match averaging 3.25 goals per contest.
Travis Thompson provided the lone goal, his third of the season, for the Red Storm on Friday night. Thompson, a native of Garden City, is now tied for the team lead in goals on the campaign. Fellow Long Island native Luca Fargnoli assisted on Thompson's tally and now leads the team with seven points.
For his efforts against the Bluejays, Thompson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday afternoon, his first such accolade of the season.
Nico Bezama tallied four saves in the tie, matching his second-highest single-game total of the campaign. The sophomore from West New York, N.J., only surrendered a goal on a penalty kick in the 37th minute.
Thanks in large part to the team's strength of schedule, the Johnnies are 43rd in the RPI as of Monday morning.
After Tuesday night, the Red Storm will have one more non-conference tilt on its schedule this season, a Tuesday night showdown against No. 6 Maryland in College Park on Oct. 20.
Monmouth enters Tuesday's matchup with a record of 2-5-1. The Hawks have not taken the field in more than a week, having last played at Stony Brook, a 2-1 loss, on Monday, Sept. 28.
The Hawks are 0-3 in road games this season, having been outscored, 7-2, in those three games.
Monmouth boasts a ranked result, drawing with then-No. 15 Hofstra on Sept. 12 in West Long Branch.
The Hawks have three multi-goal scorers this season led by Raul Garcia with three. Garcia and Jasen Bottini (2G, 3A) are tied for the team lead in points (7).
Sophomore Herman Johnsen has played every minute between the pipes for Monmouth this season, posting two shutouts and a 2.04 goals against average.
St. John's and Monmouth will meet for the sixth time in the history of the two programs on Tuesday night.
The Red Storm owns a 4-1 record in the all-time series, including a 3-1 mark in Queens.
The teams have squared off in three of the last four seasons. The Johnnies took last year's meeting, 1-0, on Oct. 21 in The Garden State.
After taking on the Hawks, the Red Storm will return on Saturday night when it welcomes No. 3 Georgetown to Queens. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
