The program honored Michael Weinberg and Anthony Varvaro on Saturday morning
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2026) – Head Coach Mike Hampton and the St. John's baseball program hosted special plaque unveiling ceremony on Saturday to commemorate the legacy of Michael Weinberg and Anthony Varvaro on Saturday morning.
The ceremony began with the PAPD Honor Guard and FDNY Honor Guard presenting our nations colors. Members of Engine 299 and Ladder Company152 were present and toed the line with student-athletes on the field, along with Vice President and Director of Athletics Ed Kull.
Coach Hampton spoke on the impact of both Weinberg and Varvaro during the ceremony. "We are not simply recognizing two former players, we are preserving their two stories. Stories that teach our current players what it truly means to wear the St. John's uniform," said Hampton. "It means competing fiercely, while caring deeply."
Following the remarks, Campus Minister for Athletics Fr. Richard Rock presided over a special prayer for the memorial plaques.
Family members of Weinberg and Varvaro threw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the Red Storm's 4-3 victory over Sacred Heart.
