Red Storm and Huskies will kick off at 6 p.m. on ESPN+
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a three-game road swing, the St. John's men's soccer team will return home for a pair of matches beginning with a Tuesday night showdown against UConn at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The contest will kick off at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
With just three games remaining in the regular season, the Red Storm is in need of wins to keep its hopes at a BIG EAST Tournament berth alive. Only four squads in the 12-team league will qualify for the conference tournament, which will be held on Nov. 12 and Nov. 15 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boys, Md. The two division winners will earn automatic berths and will be joined by the teams with two highest remaining point totals in the league. If the season ended today, nine points would be enough to enter a tiebreaker for the fourth and final spot.
The Red Storm will look to snap a four-game winless streak when it takes the field in Queens on Tuesday night. The Johnnies have been successful at home this season, logging a 4-2-0 mark with both losses coming at the hands of nationally ranked opponents. Since the venue opened in 2002, St. John's is 147-55-44 (.687) at Belson.
Two St. John's freshmen were recognized among the nation's best late last week, as Scott Wilhelmsen and Ander Gonzalez earned spots on the TopDrawerSoccer Midseason Freshman Top 100 list. Wilhelmsen, a defender from Norway, checked in at no. 87 while Gonzalez, a midfielder from Mexico City, slid in at no. 97. Wilhelmsen has started all 12 of his appearances this season for the Red Storm. Gonzalez has recorded two assists in 11 appearances, 10 of which have been starts.
UConn comes south to Queens riding a two-game winning streak, defeating Marquette on the road, 1-0, before downing Providence, 2-0, at home this past weekend.
Following an 0-3 start to the season, UConn is 7-3-2 in its last 12 matches, including a 3-2 mark against BIG EAST foes.
UConn is led by senior forward Elijah Langford, who has scored seven goals in 14 games, including a pair of game winners.
Langford is one of seven multi-goal scorers on the Huskies, a group that includes junior forward Evan Pickering (4G, 0A) and sophomore midfielder Preston Alessio (3G, 2A).
Kyle Durham has started 14 of the Huskies' 15 matches in goal, compiling a 6-6-2 record with a 1.21 goals against average and a .746 save percentage. The redshirt junior from Brooklyn has three clean sheets to his name in 2026.
The Red Storm and the Huskies will meet for the 43rd time in a series that dates back to 1981. The classic BIG EAST rivalry has been as even as they come over that span with each side holding a 17-17-8 record.
St. John's is winless in its last six matches against UConn since the fall of 2021 (0-3-3).
The series between St. John's and UConn has produced countless memorable matches, including the 2011 BIG EAST Tournament title game that went in favor of the Red Storm, 1-0.
