Red Storm will be back in action on Saturday night to take on Villanova at MSG
HARTFORD, Conn. - The No. 15/15 St. John's men's basketball fell to No. 6/6 UConn on Wednesday in Hartford, 72-40.
The setback marked St. John's first defeat since Jan. 3, snapping a 13-game winning streak that spanned 51 days.
Joson Sanon scored a team-high 10 points at PeoplesBank Arena. The double-digit scoring effort marked the sophomore's 11th of the season and first since the Red Storm's win over Butler on Jan. 28 at Madison Square Garden.
Bryce Hopkins tallied eight points and five boards against the Huskies. Ruben Prey added seven points on 5-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe.
UConn's Tarris Reed Jr. led all players with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Alex Karaban added 14 while Solo Ball chipped in 11 points.
After Hopkins opened the scoring, the Huskies responded with nine straight points to take an early 9-2 lead. The Red Storm clawed back to get within a single possession on three separate occasions culminating with an Oziyah Sellers slam to make it, 13-11, at the 13:36 mark. Connecticut responded with a 18-0 scoring run to extend its lead as many as 20.
Later in the first half, the Johnnies began to cut into deficit courtesy of Sanon, who scored 10 of the Red Storm's next 12 points to bring it back to 14, 38-24, with 1:38 remaining in the half. The Huskies went into the locker room with a 41-26 advantage.
In the second half, Zuby Ejiofor buried a corner triple to pull back within 14, 1:32 into the latter stanza. The Huskies responded with an 11-2 scoring run inflate the advantage to 23, 54-31, at the 13:40 mark. UConn continued to expand its lead to as many as 33, cruising through the second half to take home the victory and split the regular season series with the Johnnies.
St. John's will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts RV/RV Villanova at Madison Square Garden at 8 p.m. on FOX.
