St. John’s Takes Care of Providence, 6-1

Red Storm improve to 2-0 in BIG EAST play
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John's women's tennis team cruised past BIG EAST foe Providence, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Providence Tennis Center.
With the win over the Friars (1-5, 0-2 BIG EAST), the Red Storm improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
St. John's opened the match by securing the doubles point. Charlotta Buss and Giulia Bizzari set the tone with a victory on the No. 3 court over Gabrielle Plonowski and Lauren Krise. The duo of Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman clinched the doubles point for the Red Storm, defeating Allison Root and Flora Eidson, 6-2.
Holding a 1-0 advantage, the Red Storm carried that momentum into singles play. Redman earned her second victory of the day in dominant fashion, defeating Erika Beltran, 6-0, 6-0. Gomez extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Krise on the No. 6 court.
Victoria Papadopoulou clinched the match for St. John's with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Root on the No. 1 court.
Providence picked up its lone point via retirement on the No. 2 court, but the Red Storm added to their total as Buss and Nao Kojima each recorded singles victories to secure the 6-1 result.
St. John's will return to action on March 3, traveling to DeLand, Fla., to face Stetson. First serve from the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center is scheduled for 10 a.m.
