The Johnnies earn their third sweep of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team earned a 4–0 sweep of Monmouth on Sunday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Johnnies (4–2) jumped out to an early advantage by capturing the doubles point with wins in the first two completed matches. St. John's carried that momentum into singles play, securing victories in three matches to seal the shutout.
Charlotta Buss and Nao Kojima opened the day for the Red Storm with a commanding 6–0 victory over Becky Fisher and Jillian Gray on the No. 3 court. The red-hot pairing of Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman secured the doubles point for St. John's, defeating Hana McKinney and Ximena Cano, 6–2, on the No. 1 court.
Holding a 1–0 lead, Victoria Papadopoulou kept the momentum rolling for the Red Storm, earning a straight-set victory over Hana McKinney, 6–0, 6–1. Nao Kojima followed with her second win of the day, cruising past Pavitra Parikh, 6–0, 6–1, to push the St. John's advantage to 3–0.
Alicia Gomez sealed the match on the No. 6 court, not dropping a game in a dominant 6–0, 6–0 sweep of Jillian Gray to clinch the victory for the Johnnies.
With the win, St. John's secured its third consecutive victory over the Hawks in as many seasons.
The Johnnies will return to action on Friday, Feb. 13, welcoming Hofstra to the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
