The Red Storm return to Belson Stadium on Sept. 9 to face CCSU
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.– The St. John's women's soccer team fell on the road to Monmouth in a 1-0 decision on Thursday afternoon.
The Red Storm (2-3-1) battled Hawks (3-1-2) in a tightly contested road matchup, but came up short after a first-half penalty kick. After trailing 4-2 in shots at the break, the Johnnies increased their pressure in the second half, outshooting Monmouth, 5-3, to finish even at seven attempts apiece.
St. John's also generated a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, including four in the second half, while Kayla Bower made three saves to keep the visitors within striking distance throughout the contest.
Of the Red Storm's seven shots, Carly Schuler accounted for a team-high three attempts and St. John's lone shot on goal. The freshman has appeared in four matches this season and has registered three shots in each of her last two outings.
Nora Basile was credited with two shots during contest. Basile has recorded at least one shot in four of St. John's six matches this season, highlighted by a season-high five attempts against UMass in the 2026 opener.
St. John's opened the match with a pair of quality chances, as Basile and Schuler both narrowly missed the mark during the opening 15 minutes. Monmouth broke through first in the 22nd minute when Chloe Messer converted from the penalty spot to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage that they would hold for the remainder of the afternoon.
The two sides continued to battle throughout the opening half, as Bower made two saves over the first 45 minutes to keep the Johnnies within one heading into the break.
The Red Storm limited the Hawks to just one shot on goal in the second half while mounting a strong offensive push of their own. St. John's generated three additional set-piece opportunities and evened the shot total at seven apiece by the final whistle. Despite the increased pressure after the break, the Hawks held off the Red Storm to secure the 1-0 victory.
Following Thursday's contest, the Red Storm will return home to face Central Connecticut at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9.
