Flo Liu will begin his first season on staff with the Red Storm in 2019. Liu, who previously served as an assistant coach at Presbyterian and Temple, will serve in the same capacity at St. John’s.
“Flo comes to us with a wealth of soccer background, playing at high levels, developing great recruiting contacts,” said Head Coach Dr. Dave Masur. “He will have a positive impact at practice and educate our players on the appropriate skills to enhance their development on and off the field.”
Liu comes to Queens following three seasons on the staff at Presbyterian College, where he served as the team’s recruiting coordinator.
“’I’m thankful and honored with this opportunity, and am very grateful to the St.John’s administration, Dr. Masur, and David Janezic for trusting me to be a part of a successful program, Liu said. “Dr. Masur is one of the winningest coaches in college soccer and the program has a tremendous history. I look forward to getting started with him, the department and our players. I’m also very grateful to Jonathan Potter, Head Coach at Presbyterian College for giving me a tremendous learning opportunity at Presbyterian College and for his continued support of my career.”
Liu arrived at Presbyterian in 2016 with the program coming off the heels of a winless campaign. After a .500 effort in league play in his Liu’s first season with the team, the Blue Hose were conference champions by the end of the 2017 campaign, defeating top-seeded High Point in penalty kicks and clinching the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. This past season, Liu helped the Blue Hose finish third in the Big South regular season standings, a program record, and advance to the conference tournament championship game for the second time in as many years.
Under Liu’s guidance, First Team All-Big South selection Jordan Barbara led seven members of the Blue Hose on all-conference teams in 2018. The previous year, three of Liu’s recruits earned spots on the Big South All-Freshman Team.
Liu arrived at Presbyterian following two seasons at Temple, where he assisted in all aspects of program from player development to marketing and alumni relations. While in Philadelphia, Liu mentored seven all-conference and two all-region honorees, including MLS draftee 2017 Jorge Gomez-Sanchez, who was selected by Vancouver with the 51st overall pick.
After winning just two games in Liu’s first year on staff in 2014, the Owls completed one of the nation’s best turnarounds in 2015 by turning in a record of 10-7-2.
A native of Richmond, British Columbia, Liu was a standout at University of Connecticut where he helped UConn to a pair of NCAA national quarterfinal appearances in 2011 and 2012. Part of a defense that set a school record with 16 shutouts in 2011, Liu played every minute in BIG EAST play en route to a Blue Division regular season championship in 2012. UConn was ranked No.1 in the country for majority of the regular season and finished top four nationally in goals against average both years.
In 2013, Liu had a brief playing spell in Germany, including training with Eintracht Frankfurt of German Bundesliga.
