Samantha Prahalis-Holmes joined the St. John's women's basketball staff in July 2022, in the role of director of player development and advanced scouting.
Prahalis-Holmes arrives in Queens following a stint at James Madison, where she served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for two seasons. In her first year on the sideline, JMU went 14-10, 9-6 CAA in 2020-21 season, leading to a no. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament. Primarily working with the guards, she saw two of her players earn all-conference honors, including CAA Rookie of the Year Peyton McDaniel.
This past season, Prahalis-Holmes guided JMU to a 10-8 finish in conference play, which marked the 18th consecutive season the Dukes have finished above .500 in league play. She mentored yet another All-CAA selection in Kiki Jefferson. The veteran guard poured in 18.8 points per game and ranked second in the nation in made free throws with 174 in 2021-22.
Prior to her jump to the collegiate coaching ranks, Prahalis-Holmes was an accomplished high school head coach on Long Island. She spent one season at the helm at North Babylon High School in 2019-2020, after spending the prior two seasons as the head coach of Ward Melville. Prahalis-Holmes began her coaching career as the volunteer assistant coach for the girls' varsity team at her alma mater, Commack High School from 2016-17.
Prahalis-Holmes played collegiate basketball at Ohio State from 2008-12. She finished her time with the Buckeyes as the Big Ten career assists leader, dishing out 901 helpers during her career. In her final season, she was named Big Ten Player of the Year, after posting career highs in points (613), points per game (19.8), steals per game (2.2) and rebounds per game (4.1). In 2021, she was inducted into The Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame.
After a spectacular collegiate career, Prahalis-Holmes was drafted sixth overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2012 WNBA Draft. In her rookie season she finished second in Rookie of the Year voting and was named to the All-Rookie First Team.
Prahalis-Holmes went on to play overseas at multiple stops from Romania (2013-14), Russia (2014), Turkey (2015), Italy (2015-16) and. Hungary (2016-17).
Prahalis-Holmes, Commack, N.Y., native, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in criminology from Ohio State in 2012.
