VOLLEYBALL TEAM EARNS AVCA ACADEMIC AWARD

JAMAICA, N.Y. - For the fourth time in the past five years, the St. John's volleyball team earned the prestigious American Volleyball Coaches Association/Molten Team Academic Award. The recipients of the award, who range from NCAA Division 1 to high school girls' and boys' teams, must have a cumulative team grade point average over 3.30. St. John's was one of 21 Division I schools to earn this award.

"The AVCA/Molten Team Academic Award is truly one of the most coveted honors of all the AVCA programs," said AVCA Executive Director Sandra L. Vivas. "The sport of volleyball has a proud tradition of maintaining high academic performance among its student-athletes. Our member coaches recognize this and the award has become a goal for all teams to strive towards on an annual basis."

"This is a tremendous honor for our team and I am very proud of each and every one of them," said St. John's head volleyball coach Joanne Persico-Smith. "It is imperative that our team recognizes the importance of balancing academics with athletics."

The Red Storm open the 2000 season on the road at the Central Connecticut State tournament in New Britain, Conn., on Friday, September 1.
