The Storm swept the Wagner Seahawks in three games, 15-2, 15-4, 15-8 to clinch the title, their second tournament championship this season, and in the process improved to 10-3 on the season. Wagner fell to 2-9.
Senior Olga Roudovski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sheepshead Bay) was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player, for totaling 51 kills, 33 digs and five services aces on the weekend. She needs only 68 more kills to tie Kristine Knobel, '99, for the school record of 1,255. Freshman Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii/Maryknoll) was also named to the all-tournament team, for racking up 116 assists and 14 digs in three matches. This was the second all-tournament honor this season for both Roudovski and Kurasaki.
Seniors Aleeza Miller (Los Angeles, Calif./Cal-Berkeley) and Amanda Berg (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) led the Storm to the victory over the Seahawks with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Berg hit .632 for the match, committing no errors. Sterie Varghese (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) also put in a solid defensive effort with a team-high 12 digs and a pair of block assists.
In the second match against Lehigh, Roudovski hit .535 with a match-high 25 kills, 19 digs and four service aces to lead the Storm to a three-game victory (15-4, 15-2, 15-11) over the Mountain Hawks (4-6). It was the fifth time in the last six matches that Roudovski has totaled over 20 kills in a match, and the 15th time in her career. Roudovski's four service aces, all in the second game of the match, tied her career-high.
Junior Kristy Mercein (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) was the only other player in double figures with 11 kills. She also added 14 digs and a pair of service aces.
In the first round match against Duquesne, Roudovski had a match-high 26 kills to lead the Storm to a three-game victory Saturday evening. After taking the first game 15-11, the Storm jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second game, before the Dukes started to inch back into it. Despite a late rally by Duquesne, St. John's hung on to take the second game, 15-12. The Red Storm trailed for most of the third game. Down 6-2, the St. John's managed to tie the game at 7-7. Mercein gave the Storm an 8-7 lead with one of her nine kills. It was a seesaw battle the rest of the way, as the Storm closed out the match with an ace by Mercein and a solo block by Miller.
Roudovski's 26 kills were a season-high. Freshman Rosalyn Dang (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) was the only other St. John's player in double figures with 10 kills.
The Storm will be back in action on Wednesday, September 20 when they travel to Stony Brook for a 7:00 non-conference match with the Seawolves.
