Track & Field Prepares for BIG EAST Championships

At the 169th Street Armory for the Fordham Invitational, Germaine Johnson (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) led the way for the men, besting his previous times in both the 200M and 400M. In the 400M, Johnson placed fourth in a time of 49.67, qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships. In the 200M, Johnson placed thirteenth (22.75) behind teammate Jason Laing (Kingston, N.Y./Lakewood), who placed twelfth in a time of 22.74.
Also qualifying for the BIG EAST was Andy Mitchell, who ran a 1:57.55 in the 800M, and Tom Grandy (Yonkers, N.Y./Iona Prep), who recorded a 4.35m mark in the pole vault.
At the St. Valentine Invite hosted by Boston University, Dinah Mensah (Bronx, N.Y./Roosevelt) qualified for her fourth individual event at the BIG EAST Championships, the 400M. Mensah has now qualified for the 400M, 500M, 800M, 1,000M and two relays (4x400M, 4x800M).
Freshman Jen Lebowitz (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) posted her best time of the season in the mile, 5:22.1, a BIG EAST qualifying mark. Rounding out the BIG EAST qualifiers from this weekend is the womens DMR, Mensah, Tomika Warren (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center), Tiffany Barnes (Queens Village, N.Y./Cardozo) and Lynn Medjuck (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) ran a 12:11.75 for a championships berth.
Sheba George (Brooklyn, N.Y./Tilden) improved her best weight throw mark this weekend, posting a second place, 18.25 finish. George, already an NCAA Provisional qualifier, now moves up on the NCAA qualifying list.
For the men, Matt Cotter (Wakefield, RI/South Kingston) ran a 1:54.99 in the 800M, qualifying for his second event at BIG EAST.
The Red Storm women have qualified 13 athletes in 16 different events and the men 14 in 12 events for the BIG EAST Championships. Competition begins on Saturday, February 17 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
