St. Johns Volleyball Falls to Columbia, 3-2

Jamaica, N.Y.The St. Johns volleyball team lost a non-conference match to Columbia, 3-2 (28-30, 30-24, 31-29, 23-30, 15-8), tonight at Alumni Hall. The teams were evenly matched with Columbia holding an advantage in hitting percentage (.202-.196) and blocks (18.0-14.5). St. Johns held the advantage in digs (95-79) and the teams were even in the assist column at 51. The defeat drops the Red Storm to 13-10 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST. The Lions improve to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in Ivy League play.
The St. Johns attack was led by freshman Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) who recorded a double-double with 22 kills and 11 digs. Junior setter Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii) dished out 45 assists while freshman libero Shannon Engle (San Jose, Calif.) tallied a career-high 25 digs.
Columbias attack was led by Madia Willis and Kathy Lavold who recorded 16 kills each. Meghan Feeney tallied 36 assists while Katie Beauregard recorded 23 digs for the Lions.
The Red Storm return to action on Friday, October 11 when they host BIG EAST conference rival Connecticut. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
