SJU Men's Fencing Sweep, Women Suffer First Loss

In women's action, SJU beat Columbia, 16-11, winning the foil and the sabre, 6-3, but losing the epee (5-4). In its second match, SJU suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of Rutgers, 14-13, losing the epee (7-2) and the sabre (6-3), but winning the foil (8-1). In its third match, the SJU women won a hard fought match versus Princeton, 14-13, losing the epee (7-2) and the foil (6-3), but winning the sabre (9-0).
The team of junior Elizabeth Thottam (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) , and sophomores Irina Khouade (Moscow Region, Russia/Municipal Lyceum) and Jean Hergenhan (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) led the foil to an impressive 23-4 record overall. Khouade led the team with a record of 9-0, while junior Emese Takacs (Budapest, Hungary/ II Rakoczy Rereuc) won five of nine bouts, leading the team in the sabre.
For the men, SJU defeated Columbia, 17-10, in its first match, winning the sabre 6-3, the epee, 8-1, but losing the foil (6-3). In its second match, SJU beat Rutgers 21-6, winning the foil 7-2, the epee 5-4, and the sabre 9-0. In its final match of the day the Red Storm had an impressive win against Princeton winning the bout 21-6. They won the foil, 6-3, the epee, 8-1, and the sabre, 7-2.
Sophomore Darren Whitmer (Detroit, Mich./Brother Rice) and Ivan Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) led the team in the sabre, each winning eight of nine bouts. The Red Storm was led in the foil by junior Joseph Fisher (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn High School) , who went 7-2; this year he has a record of 30-6 in the foil.
The men's and women's fencing teams are back in action February 23, fencing at Penn, with Penn State, Temple, Columbia, and Cornell.
