St. Johns Volleyball Excels in the Classroom

Head coach Joanne Persico-Smiths squad has maintained a 3.0 or higher GPA for six consecutive years. St. Johns volleyball players are highly motivated to succeed on the court as well as in the classroom, Persico-Smith said.
Sophomore setter Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii) earned a 3.8 GPA during the 2001-02 academic year. Kurasaki also played in all 99 games for St. Johns, averaging 10.82 assists and 2.66 digs per game. Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 2000, Kurasaki ranks second on St. Johns all-time assist list after just two seasons with the Red Storm.
Junior Meaghan Creedon (Rohnert Park, Calif.) maintained a 3.6 GPA this year and was recently inducted in the Presidents Society, the most prestigious honor for a St. Johns student. On the court, Creedon posted 1.43 kills per game and was one of the Red Storms top blockers with a 0.51 block per game average.
Alysse Bak (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) pulled in a 3.9 GPA during her sophomore year and carries a 3.75 overall index. For the Red Storm, Bak played in 39 games, recording 37 digs and six service aces.
Sophomore Rosalyn Dang (Honolulu, Hawaii), one of nine members of the volleyball team to earn a 3.0 or higher, earned a 3.6 GPA this year. Dang recorded 252 kills on the season, averaging 2.60 per game. Dang led the team in hitting percentage (.219), while also recording 40 service aces on the year.
In her first season at St. Johns freshman Allison Heckl (Corrales, N.M.) excelled in the classroom earning a 3.9 GPA. Heckl saw action in 10 games for the Red Storm, notching seven kills and four set assists.
The Red Storm open the 2002 season on Friday, August 30 vs. Wisconsin at the North Carolina Tournament.
