Red Storm Volleyball Sweeps Two Matches Versus Local Rivals

In the first match versus St. Francis, St. John?s took a 1-0 lead with a 30-18 game one victory. Sophomore Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) was a perfect six kills on six attempts, while senior setter Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii) dished out 13 assists. Freshman libero Nicole Colaluca (Naperville, Ill.) added a game-high five digs.
Game two was almost identical to game one as the Red Storm took a 2-0 lead with a 30-11 game two victory. Ahlers continued her hot hitting with five kills on six attempts. Freshman setter Erin Poglits (West Bloomfield, Mich.) dished 13 assists, while senior Rosalyn Dang (Honolulu, Hawaii) recorded three service aces and six digs.
St. John?s closed out the match with 30-13 game three victory highlighted by freshman Venecia Smith?s (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) four service aces. Junior Allison Heckl (Corrales, N.M.) tallied seven kills, while Poglits added eight assists and four digs.
For the match versus the Terriers, St. John?s was led by Ahlers? 11 kills on 12 attempts for a .833 hitting percentage. Poglits finished with 18 assists, while Kurasaki dished out 13 assists. Dang and Colaluca finished with a team-high seven digs apiece.
In the match versus Fordham, St. John?s took an early 1-0 lead, winning game one, 30-23. Ahlers led the offensive attack with nine kills, while freshman Alicia Carmignani (Oswego, Ill.) added four kills on six attempts. Kurasaki dished out 16 assists, while Dang added three digs.
The Red Storm took a 2-0 lead over the Rams with a 30-19 game two victory. Ahlers was dominant once again, recording eight kills on 12 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage. Kurasaki dished out 13 assists and seven digs.
St. John?s closed out the match, winning game three, 30-25. Poglits dished out 11 assists and Ahlers tallied five kills in the final game.
For the match versus the Rams, Ahlers finished with 25 kills on 37 attempts for a .514 hitting percentage. Kurasaki finished with 30 assists and 13 digs, as Colaluca was solid on defense with 10 digs.
The Red Storm returns to action on Wednesday, September 17 when they host Siena. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
