RIVERDALE, NY (December 1, 2004) - Senior Blessing Egwu (Queens, NY) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 20 lb weight throw this afternoon at the Manhattan Multi Invitational. Egwu, who was an All-EAST selection last indoor season, threw an 18.14m distance, good enough for first place in the event.
"I am extremely proud of Blessing," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "Not only did she qualify for the BIG EAST, ECAC and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships, her throw is currently the best in the country in this event so far."
Two of Egwu's teammates also placed first in their events today at the Multi Invitational. Senior Sophia Bazile (Nyack, NY) qualified for the BIG EAST Championships with her 17.11m distance in the long jump. Freshman Thalene King (Manchester, Jamaica) made her mark in her first event for St. John's by running a 7.20 in the 55m dash.
The Red Storm returns to action Friday, December 10, 2004 when they will compete at the Fordham Opener in Bronx, NY.
