Relay Team Sets School Record, Egwu Wins

Jamaica, N.Y.- The 4x200 relay team of Shernette Davis (West Hempstead, N.Y.), Vanessa Sessa (Beltsville, Md.), Kay-Dian Reid (Windsor, Conn.) and Judy Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) broke a St. John's school record this past weekend at the Florida Relays, in Gainesville, Fl. The relay team recorded a record-breaking time of 1:39.00, passing the 1:42.43 record set back 23 years ago in 1981 by Sophie Davis, Jodie Siciliano, Lolita Jones and Jeanine Huggins. Reid also ran the 400m, which she finished with a time of 56.79, while Williams finished the 200m with a time of 25.81.
In the mid-distance events, sophomore Jasmine Barreto (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Red Storm, finishing at 5:00.58 in the 1500m. Thamra Cherisme (Hollis, N.Y.) and Shani Spence (West Orange, N.J.) finished one after the other in the 800m with times of 2:18.74 and 2:19.78, respectively.
The Red Storm's throwing unit traveled to the Monmouth University Season Opener this past weekend on the 27th. Junior Blessing Egwu (Queens, N.Y.) won the hammer throw, setting a personal best of 50.29m. Judy Owens (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed fifth in the same event, recording another personal best at 45.95m. Tetee Kyuateh (Providence, R.I.) finished sixth with a distance of 44.47m. Javelin thrower Grace Zollman (Joseph, Ore.) took second place with a distance of 37.94m.
The Red Storm will host the SJU Monday Meeting I today, March 29, at DaSilva Memorial Field starting at 4 p.m.
