QUEENS, N.Y. -- The St. John's baseball game against Fordham, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 1p.m., has been cancelled due to rain in the New York Metropolitan area.
The Red Storm enter the final weekend of BIG EAST play in fourth place. St. John's is 33-18 overall and 15-8 in the league. The 33 wins are the most for a Red Storm team since 1997, when the team won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Regional.
Notre Dame (43-9, 18-5) is the only league school to have clinched a spot in next weekend's BIG EAST Tournament, which they did after sweeping Rutgers at home last week.
Pittsburgh is in second place with a 16-7 mark in the BIG EAST and a 37-14 overall record, followed by Boston College, 28-22 overall and 14-7 in the league. Rutgers, 30-20 overall and 13-3 in the league, is in fifth place.
St. John's will travel to play at Pittsburgh this weekend. The Red Storm, who swept the Panthers at home last year, need to win at least two of three games to guarantee their first appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament since 1999. Two wins would leave St. John's with a league mark of 17-8, the same as the Panthers, but the winner of the series will own a head-to-head tiebreaker.
Senior shortstop Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J.) has been one of the leaders for the Red Storm, who started the season off with a 3-7 mark, but have won 30 of their last 41 games. A third-team preseason All-American selection, Rozema is batting .330, with 63 hits, seven doubles and a team-high 20 stolen bases.
St. John's has been aided by a pitching staff that has been among the best in the league, ranking second in the league in earned run average overall (3.97), and leading the league in conference action (2.97). Sophomore Anthony Varvaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) is 7-3 with a 3.77 earned run average, senior Joe Reid (Rutherford, N.J.) is 6-3 with a 4.93 ERA and sophomore Craig Hansen (Glen Cove, N.Y.) is 2-1 with 3.27 ERA and eight saves.
First pitch at The Ballpark is slated for noon. For the most up-to-date information and statistics on St. John's Athletics, please visit www.RedStormSports.com
