The Red Storm took the field for the program's first Super Regionals appearance since 2012 in front of a record crowd of 7,537 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The setback snapped the Johnnies' eight game-winning streak, which marked the longest active stretch in the country entering the contest.
St. John's was led offensively by Adam Agresti, who went 1-for-1 with a double and two walks. Will Cowan recorded a hit with a single in the top of the seventh. Cowan and Ayden Frey both reached base twice in the opener.
Liam O' Leary tied the program's all-time record for innings pitched in a single-season on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. The Red Storm bullpen gave up two runs on four hits and struck out for in 4.2 innings of work. The relief effort was led by sophomore Tyler Longoria, who threw season-high 3.1 innings gave up one hit, struck out three batters and did not record a walk.
Alabama's starter Tyler Fay threw for 7.1 innings of scoreless work surrendering only two hits and struck out nine. Offensively, shortstop Justin Lebron paced The Tide going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Bryce Fowler and Brennan Holt both drove in a pair of runs.
In the first inning after the Red Storm went down in order, O' Leary logged two punchouts and Rob Mansour recorded the putout to leave a runner on and bring the opening frame to a close.
In the top half of the second, Agresti blooped one into right for a stand-up double. The catcher later advanced to third on a fielder's choice but was left stranded. In the latter half of the frame, the Crimson Tide got on the board courtesy of a two-RBI double from Brennan Holt to grab an early 2-0 edge.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Alabama was able to get the leadoff man on board. O'Leary etched his name into the record books by tying Hagan's single-season record with a strike out of Eric Hines. The Crimson Tide loaded the bases twice and racked up four runs to stretch the advantage to 6-0 at the conclusion of four innings.
St. John's threatened in the top of the seventh frame, Agresti worked a walk to start the inning followed by a single to right field from Cowan. Frey got plunked to load the bases with no outs before the Crimson Tide retired the next three batters to escape the jam.
The Crimson Tide tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held off the Red Storm in the final frame to take a 1-0 advantage in the series.
