Gainesville, Fla.- Senior Shernette Davis, along with juniors Blessing Egwu and Grace Zollman competed at the NCAA Regionals this weekend on the campus of the University of Florida.
Davis, who ran the 100m (11.59) and 200m, broke three school records, an accomplishment she has achieved 10 times during her two short years at St. John's. In the 200m, Davis finished fourth overall in the with a time of 23.08, qualifying her to compete in the NCAA Finals at the University of Texas in Austin. This is the 14th consecutive year that St. John's has qualified for the NCAA Finals and the 39th individual who has qualified since 1991.
"We are extremely proud of Shernette and her accomplishments over the past few years," said Coach Jim Hurt. "We are looking forward to Nationals and excited to keep the tradition of excellence alive for St. John's Track and Field."
"I feel so good, I'm so excited to go to the NCAA Finals", said Davis. "I felt very strong at the end of the race, and I know that I can run faster, and hopefully improve my time to under 23.00 at Nationals. I have worked very hard to get where I am, and although I came in fourth, I am very excited and happy!"
Egwu finished 20th overall in the hammer throw with a distance of 54.14. Zollman also placed in the top 20 in the javelin throw at 17th. All three St. John's athletes placed in the top 20, which as Coach Hurt explained: "Is a outstanding accomplishment."
Davis will compete in the 200m at the 2004 Outdoor Track and Field NCAA Championships at the University of Texas in Austin on June 10-12.
