St. John's Tennis Competes In ITA East Regional Championships

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's tennis programs will travel this weekend for the ITA East Region Championships. The Red Storm women's team will send five of its student-athletes to West Point, N.Y. on Friday, Oct. 21 for the championships, while the men will travel to Hanover, N.H. on Thursday, Oct. 20. Both events finish on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
DARTMOUTH ITA EAST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Leading the Red Storm men's team are veterans Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.), David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden), Louis Desmarteaux (Thornhill, Ontario) and Claudio Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia). In the 2005 Northeast Regional Tournament at Brown University in September, Bauer and Halim grabbed second place in Third Flight doubles. The duo fell to Ray Josephs and Gregory Marks of Marist, 8-5.
Bauer finished the spring 2005 season 8-8, performing his best in the No. 5 position in which he finished 4-2. At the BIG EAST tournament, he defeated Chris Louis of Boston College 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Nylen ended his spring season 13-5, the best 2005 season finish for St. John's. Nylen defeated Soma Kesthely of Boston College 6-3, 6-1 at the BIG EAST tournament, helping his team clinch third place.
Halim finished 10-8 for the season, performing his best in the No. 4 position (3-1). Halim and Nick Stocker finished first on the team in doubles play with a 6-1 record, while Desmarteaux finished the spring season 5-7 in singles play.
Joining the Red Storm are freshmen Jordan Talbot (Toronto, Canada) and Aliaksandr Svetlakou (Minsk, Belarus). In their first matches for the Red Storm at the Northeast Regional tournament, Talbot finished tenth in Fifth Flight singles and Svetlakou finished seventh in the Fourth Flight.
WEST POINT ITA EAST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Location: United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

Nataly Tumsevica (Riga, Lativa) will compete in the main singles draw at the championships. Tumsevica, a freshman, has played in the No. 1 position this fall and is 1-2 overall. This weekend, Tumsevica battled teammate Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislava, Slovakia) for first place in the main draw at the Bucknell Invitational. Blahutiakova topped Tumsevica 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), (10-5). Blahutiakova will also compete at the ITA Region Championships. She begins action on Friday, in the 32-draw qualifying round. Blahutiakova is 3-0 this fall in the No. 2 position for St. John's.
In ITA doubles action, Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) and Mariana Chachua (Tbilisi, Georgia) will compete in the main draw. Adamski and Chachua are 0-1 overall. Doubles team Blahutiakova and Tumsevica will enter the 32-draw qualifying round on Friday. The two are also 0-1 this fall in No. 2 doubles.
ON DECK FOR ST. JOHN'S: The Red Storm women's tennis team will end its fall schedule on the road at Dartmouth for the Big Green Invitational on Oct. 29 to Oct. 31. The men's team will end its fall schedule at the UPenn Invite on Nov. 3 to Nov. 4.
