No. 10 Notre Dame Downs St. John's 3-1

QUEENS, N.Y. - In an intensely close game, the Red Storm women's volleyball team fell to No. 10 Notre Dame 3-1 (30-28, 26-30, 28-30, 27-30) Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm drops to 1-3 in the BIG EAST (15-6 overall), while Notre Dame continues its undefeated streak in league play, 4-0 (13-1 overall).
Outside hitter Hui Ping Huang (The Republic of China) led the match and the Red Storm with 25 kills with a hitting percentage of 46. Libero Kathleen Yee (Honolulu, Hawaii) also recorded a match high and personal best 34 digs. Tallying six total blocks and 10 kills was senior Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados) and Casie Brooks (Victoville, Calif.) gained 36 digs.
St. John's held control of the lead early in the first game by efforts from Shameka Mitchell (Lakeland, Fla.) and Huang. Notre Dame tied the match at seven each off a kill by Adrianna Stasiuk. The score continued to be tied through the 19th point when the Red Storm took the lead off of attacking errors from the Fighting Irish. St. John's stormed to a seven point lead before taking the game 30-28 on an attack error by Stasiuk.
Game two started off point-for-point and after being tied through ninth point, the Fighting Irish took a five point advantage over the Red Storm. Despite late game efforts from Huang and LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.), Notre Dame took the game 30-26.
The third game began in a similar fashion with the two teams going point-for-point. St. John's came back strong holding control for a majority of the third game. The Irish fought from behind to tie the score at 23. Attacks from Lauren Kebley and Stasiuk gave the Irish control of the board and Carolyn Cooper closed the game 30-28.
St. John's answered back in game four by taking control of the board early one. Back to back kills from Patti Hardiman (Honolulu, Hawaii) gave the Red Storm its small advantage over the Irish. High powered kills from Huang maintained the Red Storm's lead before two kills from Lauren Brewster tied up the game once again at 23. Attacking errors by the Red Storm gave the Fighting Irish the edge in the fourth game. A kill from Stasiuk brought the game to a close at 30-27.
Brewster and Stasiuk led Notre Dame with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Libero Megan Henican controlled the back line with 22 digs and three service aces, while Cooper was a strong force at the net with 4 total blocks.
The Red Storm returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 9 against BIG EAST newcomer DePaul University. The game will begin at 2 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
