The St. John's women's basketball team is off to a 7-0 start this season and recently won the championship game of the Roger and Mildred White Invitational with a win over host Northwestern. The Red Storm continues its road swing with its first BIG EAST game of the year against Marquette Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Sophomore point guard Andrea Peterson checked in with www.RedStormSports.com on the road from Chicago.
RedStormSports: Talk about your team's two big wins over ACC school Wake Forest and Big Ten school Northwestern this weekend.
Andrea Peterson: These two games that we just won are really big for us. We beat an ACC school and then a Big Ten school. When people look at us beating two different schools from two different conferences it looks impressive and it shows we can play outside of our conference.
RSS: What did you do today on your day off in Chicago?
AP: Today was a fun day, we bonded as a team. We went into the city and spent some time shopping and seeing the sights. We saw Tayshaun Prince in NikeTown but he wouldn't take a picture with us because he didn't want to "start a riot".
RSS: Anyone who has been around your team notices that everyone calls you "Petey". How did that start?
AP: It started when I was younger. Some girl on the basketball team in school started it. I was about 10 years old. Later in high school, some people didn't even know my first name. People thought my name was Petey Peterson.
RSS: Are you excited for the first BIG EAST game of the year on Tuesday night?
AP: Everyone is very excited and ready to play because this is what we've been waiting for. Our goal was to go into league play undefeated and so far we have accomplished one of our goals. It's the first game of the year in the BIG EAST and it is on national television so we get a chance to show people what we can do.
RSS: How was your Thanksgiving? Were you able to get home to Pennsylvania?
AP: I hadn't seen my family since I got to school in September, so I got to go home to Norwood PA and saw my family and my sisters and my nieces and nephews. It's crazy at times, I have four sisters, two brothers and nieces and nephews. They don't get to see me that much so when the kids get to see me they get very excited.
RSS: What is the best part about road trips?
AP: Team bonding is the best thing. We do a lot of team things that gets us closer together. You have to make the most of your time when you're away and make it fun.
RSS: If someone named a basketball shoe after you, what would the name be?
AP: Petey Flyers, since I can jump really high.
RSS: What has been your most memorable game at St. John's?
AP: Beating Georgia Tech last year. We also beat Wake Forest this weekend, so I am now 2-0 against ACC schools.
RSS: If you could take one attribute from any two players on your team, what would you take and from who?
AP: I would take Kia's skills and Dukes' personality.
RSS: Describe each of the seniors in one word.
AP: Chambers - Tough. Tara - Aggressive. Greeba - Shooter. Dana - Leader. Dukes - Handle.
RSS: What is your favorite saying?
AP: I get made fun of for the way I talk. But my favorite saying is "It's Gaaaaame Dayyyyyyy."
RSS: Which teammate makes you laugh the hardest?
AP: Tara Walker.
RSS: What is something you are an expert on and could teach a class?
AP: Softball.
RSS: Who is your favorite athlete at St. John's?
AP: Kia Wright.
RSS: What is something people would be surprised to know about your team?
AP: Off the court, we are goofy and like to laugh all the time at everything. But when it's game time, we are serious.
RSS: Being from Philadelphia, what is something you miss from home?
AP: Philly cheesesteaks from Geno's in South Philly.
RSS: If you could be on one reality television show, which one would you want to be on?
AP: "Growing Up Gotti" because they're my boys. I love them.
RSS: If you were going to open a restaurant, what kind of food would you serve?
AP: Italian food. And the name of the restaurant would be "Deuces."
RSS: Do you wear No. 22 for a special reason?
AP: My brother died in a car accident when I was younger and his birthday is Dec. 22. So that is why I wear No. 22.
RSS: What is your favorite Kim Barnes Arico quote?
AP: I LOVE DEFENSE
