Queens, NY - The St. John's baseball game scheduled for Sunday, March 20 at The Ballpark on the Queens campus against Quinnipiac has been cancelled due to inclement weather in the New York City area. A makeup date has not been rescheduled at this time.
The Red Storm improved to 8-7 overall on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats. St. John's won both games by identical scores of 6-0.
Junior Anthony Varvaro (Staten Island, NY) allowed only two hits and struck out 11 batters in the first game, and senior Jim Wladyka (Rutherford, NJ) gave up only three hits in the second game, leading the Red Storm to the sweep of Quinnipiac.
Varvaro, a preseason All-BIG EAST selection, has struck out 24 batters in his last two outings and improved to 2-2 with the win.
Junior Eddie Schultz (Flemington, NJ) drove in a pair of runs in the first game, first with an RBI single and then with a sacrifice fly. A 2-0 lead ballooned to 6-0 in the sixth when the Red Storm scored four runs, highlighted by a two-run double from senior Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, DE).
In the nightcap, Wladyka got into trouble in the first inning of the nightcap, walking the leadoff batter and giving up a single to put runners on the corners, but induced an infield fly and then a double play to get out off the inning. He retired the next seven batters before giving up a one-out double to Bryan Sabatella in the fourth. Wladyka is now 2-1 with a 2.73 earned run average.
Senior Jim Martin (Norwood, MA) had three hits and drove in a run and senior P.J. Antoniato (Levittown, NY) scored two runs and had two hits.
St. John's plays next on Tuesday, March 22, hosting Fairfield at The Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
