St. John's, Rutgers Co-Host Metropolitan Championships

Friday, April 15, 2005, Queens, NY - The St. John's University women's track and field team will co-host the 2005 Metropolitan Championships on Saturday, April 16, starting at 10 a.m. at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, NY. Rutgers University will host the several events today, beginning with the men's hammer throw at 3 p.m. in Piscataway, NJ.
Many of the areas top men's and women's track and field teams will participate in the meet, which includes Rutgers, Marist, Fordham, Manhattan, LIU and St. John's. St. John's placed third in the meet last outdoor season with a total of 111 points.
So far this outdoor season, St. John's has qualified two individuals in three events to the NCAA Eastern Regional at Randall's Island, NY next month. Blessing Egwu is qualified in the hammer with a toss of 5.58m (192'2") which ranks 17th on the national NCAA list. Kerrian Stewart is qualified in both the 200m - 23.94, 41st on the national list and in the 400m - 54.18 to rank 21st in the country. This is the 15th consecutive year that St. John's has advanced to NCAA competition in track & field.
St. John's alumni DeWayne Barrett '04 and Chris Graff `98 recently posted impressive performances at the world and national levels. Barrett who holds the St. John's record for 200m at 21.36 and the 400m record at 45.88 placed third in an international competition in Dakar clocking 46.15 for 400m which is currently the 17th fastest time in the world. Graff took third place in the USA National 10 mile road championship clocking 48:08 for the 10 mile distance. Graff is currently ranked 4th on the USARC list with 19 points.
