Queens, N.Y. - The St. John's women's volleyball team posted a 3-0 win over Stony Brook in a hard-fought match on Tuesday night at the Indoor Sports Complex in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Red Storm won three intense games (31-29, 30-19, 30-27) and improved to 2-0 (0-0 BIG EAST).
St. John's fell behind 4-0 and took a time-out in the opening minutes of play. A high powered spike from Shameka Mitchell (Lakeland, Fla.) aided in bringing the score closer and a service ace from Hui Ping Huang (Shanghai, China) tied the game 4-4. The Storm held a close lead throughout the remainder of the first game, winning 31-29.
Not only was Mitchell on a spiking spree Tuesday night, but her powerhouse block with teammate LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.) was the highlight of the second game. Junior transfer Patti Hardiman, playing her first game, keyed a 9-0 run as the Red Storm opened an 11-point lead at 30-19.
The Red Storm entered the third game on top scoring the first point, but the edge was immediately lost. For a majority of the third game, the teams went point-for-point. The Red Storm took a late lead but the Seawolves were not ready to give up, closing the gap, 29-27. The Storm received the final game point on a service error by the Seawolves and won 30-27.
St. John's continues to lead the series against Stony Brook, 6-1. Captains Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados) and Mitchell, and sophomore Blunt posted double-digit kills. Wood and Mitchell tallied 11, while Blunt had 10. Freshman libero Leena Yee (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the defensive with match and season-high 17 digs. St. John's deviated from the typical dig, set, attack style and had a few picturesque shots, such as an over-the-shoulder hook from Alena Putintseva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) that landed in the middle of the opposition to bring St. John's one step closer to victory.
Morgan Sweany led the Seawolves' attack with a match high 12 kills in their season opener.
The Red Storm returns to action this week when it travels to Worcester, Mass., for the Holy Cross Crusader Classic. The Storm will face Siena College at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, and Holy Cross (1 p.m.) and Binghamton at (4 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 3.
