Cross Country Team Competes In Fordham Invitational

Queens, NY- The St. John's cross country team participated in its official first meet of the season today at the Fordham Invitational at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. The Red Storm finished in 12th place out of 19 teams.
Senior Jasmine Barreto finished first for St. John's in 59th place overall, crossing the line in a time of 19:59 on the 5K course.
Freshman Rakibat Abiola was the next Red Storm runner to finish, clocking in at 21:03 and 104th place while junior Jodey Johnson finished right behind Abiola in 109th and a time of 21:12..
Junior Kristen Levy crossed the line in 23:11 for 151st while sophomore Tara Normandin closed out the scoring for St. John's, placing 162nd in 23:40.
Meanwhile, senior Thamara Cherisme (171-24:28), freshman Maggie Snyder (190th-26:19), senior Kaydian Reid (192th-26:31) senior Dominique Ficolara (195th-27:05), senior Tarashon Broomes (201th-28:20) and freshman Nerissa Pelle (205th-30:04) finished out the Red Storm effort.
"I thought Jasmine ran well and showed that the her work over the summer has her much improved, said head coach Jim Hurt. "But we need a few more weeks of good training before we see what we are truly capable of. Jodey, Rakiba, Kristen and Tara need a few more races to get back to their racing prime. We are looking forward to getting back to work in preparation for the Qunnipiac meet in two weeks."
St. John's is back in action Friday, Sept. 23 at the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, CT.
