St. John???s travels to Boston University Sunday for a 1 p.m. game in Case Gymnasium against the Terriers. The Red Storm is coming off a successful four-game homestand in which it went 2-2 with wins over Nicholls State (Dec. 10) and Monmouth (Dec. 2).
Noting St. John's
??? St. John???s hits the road for its final three non-conference games of the season. Up first is a Dec. 17 game at Boston U., followed by a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to take on North Carolina on Dec. 20. Following the Christmas holiday, St. John???s travels to instate foe Stony Brook on Dec. 30 before kicking off the bulk of the BIG EAST slate with a Jan. 2 matchup with Rutgers at Carnesecca Arena.
??? St. John???s (3-6, 0-1 BIG EAST) is coming off a four-game homestand in which it defeated Monmouth and Nicholls State but fell in close games to Hartford and Syracuse. In the conference opener against the Orange, sophomore Monique McLean turned in a dynamic performance, finishing one assist shy of a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. The Newport News, Va., native has been stellar in her four starts after returning from preseason knee surgery, and leads the team by averaging 16.9 points per game. She has also posted three-straight double-doubles and is on a seven-game double-digit scoring streak.
??? Tiina Sten, a junior from Turku, Finland, has started each of the Red Storm???s first nine games and has emerged as one of St. John???s best offensive threats. At 6-3, the versatile forward is second on the team with 14.3 points per game and leads the team by shooting 45 percent from the field. Against the Orange, Sten connected on 3-of-4 3-pointers and finished with 16 points in just 25 minutes due to foul trouble. She has now scored in double figures in seven straight games.
??? Sophomore Angel Tate is nearly averaging a double-double for the Red Storm with 7.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. The 6-2 forward ranks in the top five in the BIG EAST for rebounds per game. Against the Orange, Tate set a new career-high with 15 rebounds, also a team-best mark in 2006-07.
??? Senior guard Kia Wright, a consensus preseason All-BIG EAST selection and All-America candidate, returned from a preseason ankle injury but re-aggravated an offseason sports hernia injury and is doubtful for Sunday???s game against Boston University
Joyful, Joyful
??? Perhaps the rookie who has made the biggest impact with the Red Storm so far in 2006-07 is Joy McCorvey, a 6-0 forward out of Brewton, Ala.
??? She leads the team in minutes played (33.7 per game) and regularly has had to battle down low with players taller than her.
??? Last week, McCorvey was up to the challenge of defending fellow freshman Nicole Michael (Syracuse), and held the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week to just seven points, well below her 17.5 ppg average. She followed up that performance with a 19-point, 10-rebound game against Nicholls State.
The Mo Show
??? With the floor general Wright out for four-straight games, McLean has taken the reins as the Red Storm???s go-to player. She is currently riding a seven-game double-digit scoring streak and leads the team with two 20+ point games. She has posted three-straight double-doubles and leads the team and ranks eighth in the BIG EAST by averaging 16.9 points per game.
Last Time Out: St. John's 63, Nicholls State 50
??? Freshman Joy McCorvey (19 points, 10 rebounds) and sophomore Monique McLean (15 points, 11 rebounds) posted double-doubles to lead the St. John???s women???s basketball team to a 63-50 win over Nicholls State on Sunday afternoon. McCorvey scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in the second half to help spark a St. John???s run and hold a big 48-33 rebounding advantage over the Lady Colonels.
??? St. John???s closed out a four-game homestand with a win to improve to 3-6 on the young season, while Nicholls State fell to 1-7 with the setback.
??? Tiina Sten came within one rebound of her first career double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds and controlled the paint with four blocked shots. McCorvey set a new career-high with her 19 points, tied a career-best with 10 rebounds and knocked down 9-of-11 field goal attempts.
??? The Red Storm fought back from two different eight-point deficits in the first half, overcoming a late 20-12 advantage by Nicholls State with a 10-2 run to close the period. Sten scored the team???s first three buckets over the run, and freshman Allie Patterson tied the game at 20-all with a pair of free throws with just over a minute remaining. Plummer knocked down a jumper for the Lady Colonels with 42 seconds remaining, and Nikki Jo Rotolo knotted the game at 22-22 with two free throws in the final seconds.
??? Sten scored eight of her 15 points in the first half and added five rebounds, three blocked shots and an assist in 18 minutes. McLean chipped in with five points and three rebounds, and McCorvey scored two points to go along with four boards.
??? Sten knocked down a 3-point field goal as part of a 7-2 push by St. John???s to start to the second half. Rotolo found McCorvey on the break to close the run, and the Red Storm clung to its lead for the rest of the period. Free throws down the stretch, including four by McLean in the final minute of play, and a McCorvey layup as time expired gave the Red Storm its largest lead of the game, 63-50, as the final buzzer sounded.
A Look At Boston University
??? The Terriers have an overall record of 6-4 after defeating Harvard, 77-63, on Dec. 12.
??? Katie Meinhardt leads the team with 15.7 points per game, followed by Erica Kovach with 10.4 ppg.
??? St. John???s leads the all-time series with BU, 10-2, including a 64-53 victory last year in Queens.
