Lacrosse Team Begins Preseason Schedule With Double-Header On Saturday

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's lacrosse team starts its preseason with games against Stony Brook and Yale at Stony Brook University on Saturday. The Red Storm faces off against the Seawolves at 11 a.m., and then collides with the Bulldogs of Yale University at 1 p.m.
The Seawolves were ranked No. 20 in a preseason poll by Lacrosse Magazine and were picked to finish second in the America East conference this season. Last year, Stony Brook finished the year with a 10-6 overall record and checked in at No. 21 in the final STX/Geico Coaches Poll.
The Bulldogs completed their 2005 season with a 7-5 overall mark. Yale returns 19 letterwinners, including Dan Kallaugher, who was the nation's second-ranked face-off man after posting a .665 winning percentage.
St. John's has one more preseason contest before its regular schedule gets underway. Next Saturday the Red Storm travels to Hamden, Conn., to battle Quinnipiac. The Bobcats begin their first season as a member of the Great Western Lacrosse League and earned a vote in the 2006 preseason poll by Inside Lacrosse and Face Off Yearbook . Last year, Quinnipiac finished with a 2-11 record and returns 25 letterwinners and two all-conference selections this season.
St. John's kicks-off its regular season Saturday, Feb. 25 in Baltimore, Md. The Red Storm meets Robert Morris, who finished 0-13 last year. Last spring, St. John's was victorious over Robert Morris 8-7.The Red Storm hosts its first home contest at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday March 11 when it takes on Drexel. The Dragons are coming off a 9-5 year, which included an 11-5 win over St. John's in Philadelphia, Pa.
This season St. John's returns nine starters and 22 letterwinners, including team captain, senior defenseman John Kutner (Garden City, N.Y.). In St. John's first season since 1995, the Red Storm posted a 2-11 mark, while playing in the highly competitive Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).
Head coach Rick Sowell returns for his second year to lead the Red Storm. Sowell is a nationally respected coach, who was at the helm of Dartmouth for five years, leading the Big Green to a co-Ivy League Championship and NCAA tournament berth in 2003. Before coaching at Dartmouth, Sowell was an assistant coach at Georgetown for eight years.
