St. John’s Drops Season Finale to Providence, 18-10

Freshman duo of Noah Plenn and Chase Huggard combined four eight goals
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team (2-12, 0-5 BIG EAST) fell to Providence (7-8, 3-2 BIG EAST), 18-10, in its season finale on Friday night at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
Noah Plenn and Chase Huggard paced the Johnnies offensively with four goals apiece. Plenn delivered a season-high 13 shots and finished the year with a team-best 25 goals and 39 points.
Owen Rogers extended his goal streak to six games with his tally against the Friars, closing out his debut campaign with 14 goals and six assists for 20 points.
Adrian Nowak also found the back of the net, bringing his season total to 18 goals.
Providence's Richie Joseph and Rhett Chambers led all players with seven points apiece as the Friars pick up the road win.
To open the game, the Johnnies committed a costly penalty just three seconds in, leading to Providence's opening goal at the 14:27 mark. The two sides remained scoreless over the next four minutes before the Friars doubled their lead. Rogers cut the deficit in half, slipping one past the Providence goalkeeper to make it 2-1 with 6:53 remaining. Just over two minutes later, Plenn evened the score with a top-corner finish at the 4:05 mark.
Providence responded to regain the lead, but Huggard answered on the ensuing possession, knotting the game at three. The Friars closed the quarter with a late surge, netting a pair of goals just before the horn to take a 5-3 advantage into the second frame.
Huggard opened the second quarter with an impressive individual effort, beating his defender and firing home to cut the deficit to one. Providence quickly countered, scoring three consecutive goals to extend its lead to 8-4 with 7:09 to play in the half.
Plenn tallied his second goal of the game to trim the margin to three, but the Friars responded once again to push the lead back to four with 3:45 remaining. Nowak added a late goal with 17 seconds left, sending the Johnnies into halftime trailing, 9-6.
In the second half, the Red Storm successfully killed off a Providence man-up opportunity just over a minute in. Both teams then traded empty possessions for the next four minutes before the Friars extended their lead to four at the 10:26 mark. Just 40 seconds later, Plenn completed the hat trick, cutting the deficit back to three. Providence eventually broke through after a scoreless drought in the quarter, tallying three consecutive goals to extend its advantage to 13-7.
In the final frame, the Friars maintained their momentum, striking just two minutes in to extend their lead to seven. Plenn responded with his fourth goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 14-8 with 12:50 remaining. Providence answered on the ensuing possession, pushing the lead back to seven.

Just 30 seconds later, Huggard found the back of the net again, providing a spark for the Red Storm. The Friars, however, closed the game strong, scoring the next three goals to secure an 18-10 victory.
