QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to Drexel, 12-6, at DaSilva Memorial Field Saturday. The Red Storm falls to 1-2 on the season, while the Dragons move up to 4-1.
The Dragons started the game with a 3-0 run in the first quarter, which sophomore Steve Grossi scored twice. The Red Storm responded at the end of the first and in the second to tie the score at three. Freshman Thomas Manes (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored two of the goals while sophomore Justin O'Donnell (Levittown, N.Y.) picked up the other.
Four different Drexel players netted four more goals to make the score 7-3 with 12 minutes to go in the third. But in that period, St. John's was able to cut the lead to three twice, once at the 12:30 mark (7-4) and also at the end of the quarter (9-6). Scoring for St. John's was sophomore Jack Rosson (Severna Park, Md.), who scored twice, as well as sophomore Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y).
The Red Storm would not get any closer than three. The Dragons found the back of the cage four more times in the final quarter to seal the victory. Drexel's Jeff Pfeffer picked up his fourth goal in the quarter while Matt Musci recorded his third point of the game with an assist.
Drexel goalie Bruce Bickford stopped 16 Red Storm shots, while sophomore goalkeeper Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, N.Y.) stopped 15 of the Dragons' shots.
Drexel led St. John's in most categories, recording 36 shots to the Red Storm's 33, as well as taking 13 of 22 from the faceoff circle. St. John's did win the groundball battle, 26-24.
The Red Storm returns to action Wednesday, March 15 in West Hartford, Conn. when the team collides with Hartford. Last year, St. John's defeated the Hawks, 9-4, at home.
