QUEENS, N.Y. - The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Student Development for Athletes is sponsoring the fifth-annual "Wash Your Mouth Out Week" in accordance with the University's weeklong dedication to civility. This year's slogan is "Remember...Little Ears Are Listening."
"I think it is a wonderful opportunity for our athletes to support important initiative," said Dr. Nancy Kaplan, Associate Vice President for Academic Services. "Their participation in this event shows a true understanding of the values of our university."
"Wash Your Mouth Out Week" was established in 2002 by SAAC and Associate Director of Student Development, Mary Pat Beirne.
"Our student athletes were looking for a way to make a difference and they chose to create a "no profanity zone" in the indoor and outdoor facilities on campus," said Beirne.
The St. John's event has become quite popular according to Beirne and has been borrowed by several universities including Adelphi and Ohio State, as well as many high schools on Long Island.
The University's civility campaign culminates on Tuesday, March 28 in the University Center Commons with guest speaker Andrea Mosby-Jones. She will speak about the power of personal decisions. The event will be held during Common Hour.
