Men's Tennis Serves Up Wins Over Army and Colgate

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team bounced back from a three match losing streak to defeat Army and Colgate this weekend in West Point, N.Y. The wins improve the Red Storm's record to 4-4 on the season. In both matches, St. John's swept all three doubles positions to give them the advantage heading into singles action.
Junior Louis Desmarteaux (Thornhill, Ontario) is the first of the Red Storm to earn double digit singles wins (11-1) this season as he leads the team at the No. 1 spot. Meanwhile, the freshman have been making waves on the court as Aliaksandr Svetlakov (Minsk, Belarus) improves his overall singles record to 9-3 at the No. 4 spot, and Jordan Talbot (Toronto, Canada) picked up his first win of the season against Colgate Sunday morning.

In doubles action, Desmarteaux and Svetlakov fought hard to an 8-6 victory over Jake Houghton and Carl Fisher at the No. 1 position, while David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) and Tom Green (Norwich, England) found a similar battle at the No. 2 spot. The duo also grabbed an 8-6 win over Eddie Kang and Mike Good. Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) and Claudio Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) finished off doubles play with an 8-4 win over Kevin and Sean Harris at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, Army picked up its two points at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions as Phil Muhawi topped Green in a three set match (4-6, 6-3, 6-4), while David Collins defeated Halim in straight sets (7-6, 6-4). Army drove St. John's to two other three set matches at the No. 1 and No. 4 spots. Desmarteaux downed Houghton (3-6, 6-1, 7-6), while Svetlakov grabbed the win over Kang (4-6, 6-0, 7-5).

Once again the Red Storm picked up the doubles point by sweeping all three spots, with the hardest battle coming at the No. 2 position. Nylen and Green topped Marshall Wheeler and Mickey Gallagher, 9-7. Meanwhile, Desmarteaux and Svetlakov, along with Bauer and Halim both knocked down their opponents, 8-3, at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, respectively.
In singles action, the Red Storm's only loss to the Raiders came at the hands of Mickey Gallagher. He challenged Green to the contest's only three set match and was victorious at the No. 3 spot (2-6, 7-6, 10-5). Talbot earned his first win of the spring season at the No. 6 spot with a straight sweep of Michael Shea (6-0, 6-0).
The Red Storm returns to action on Thursday, March 16 against the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
