Red Storm Takes Two From Visiting Fairleigh Dickinson

St. John's got back to its winning ways on Tuesday, sweeping a home doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson by scores of 10-4 and 8-0. The Red Storm scored runs in each inning of the Game One win and went on to post the team's first shutout of the season with the 8-0 victory in Game Two.
With the pair of wins, St. John's improves to 24-11 overall and extends its non-conference win streak to eight games, while Fairleigh Dickinson falls to 7-23 overall.
Will Vogl went 3-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored in the two games, while Ryan Mahoney and Chris Joachim each added three RBI. Joachim extended his current hit streak to 14 games with base hits in both contests, and Eddie Schultz made two starts in left field and scored four runs.
Justin Gutsie dominated the Knights in the second game of the day, allowing just three hits and no walks and striking out nine in 6.0 innings. He went on to earn his first career win, while George Brown picked up the Game One by allowing just four hits and one unearned run in 5.0 innings of relief.
GAME ONE
In the first game of the day, St. John's scored runs in all six of its at-bats to overcome an early 3-1 Fairleigh Dickinson lead. A three-run triple by Chris Joachim in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Red Storm its first lead of the game at 6-3, and the St. John's offense went on to add one more in the fifth and three in the sixth to open up a 10-4 lead.
Sophomore left-hander George Brown relieved starter Colin Lynch after 1.0-plus innings and didn't allow an earned run in picking up his second win of the season. Brown gave up just four hits and one unearned run in 5.0 innings before giving way to freshman Rich Armento, who worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Joachim led the Red Storm offense with three hits and three RBI and also stole his team-leading 17th base of the season in the game. Will Vogl went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Ryan Mahoney hit a solo home run and an RBI single and Eddie Schultz was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs.
GAME TWO
St. John's jumped on Fairleigh Dickinson in the second game for two runs in the second inning and six more in the third to take an 8-0 lead. Behind six shutout innings from freshman right-hander Justin Gutsie, the Red Storm went on to win by that same 8-0 margin and sweep the twi-night doubleheader. Gutsie earned his first career win with a strong, efficient outing, as the freshman struck out nine batters, walked none and threw 58 of his 80 pitches for strikes.
Vogl delivered a big blow in the six-run St. John's third inning, hitting a bases-loaded triple off the center field wall. The senior added an RBI groundout and finished the game with four RBI, while Gil Zayas added three hits and two runs scored to help lead the offense. Jarod Hickle went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored, and Joachim extended his hitting streak to 14 games by going 1-for-4 with his seventh double of the season.
