NEW YORK– The St. John's Athletic Department tied to the BIG EAST Conference lead with five programs winning 2025-26 Team Academic Excellence Awards, the league office announced on Tuesday morning.
The St. John's baseball, women's golf, men's lacrosse, women's tennis and volleyball teams earned the highest cumulative GPA in their respective sports. It marks the highest number of recognized programs for St. John's since six teams were honored in 2020.
The awards are presented annually by the BIG EAST Conference to the team in each league-sponsored sport that achieves the highest cumulative team GPA. The GPAs are calculated using every student-athlete listed on the official roster at the conclusion of the championship season of each sport.
The BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Champion baseball program earns the academic honor the third straight year. The Johnnies posted a 3.59 mark in the classroom to claim the award for the 10th time and the fourth in seven years under the direction of Mike Hampton. After winning the BIG EAST title, the Red Storm swept through the NCAA Tallahassee Regional to advance to Super Regionals for the first time since 2012.
The women's golf team captured the award for the sixth time in the last eight years. The Johnnies have a longstanding tradition of academic excellence and were tabbed inside in the top-25 of the Women's Golf Coaches Association Scholar Team Rankings for the sixth consecutive season, checking in at no. 12. The Red Storm registered a 3.88 GPA in the classroom and on the course finished runner-up at the BIG EAST Championships, the program's best mark since 2005.
The men's lacrosse team earned the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award for the 10th time since the conference began to sponsor the sport in 2010. The Johnnies earned a 3.54 GPA during the 2025-26 academic year.
The women's tennis team garners the accolade for the second straight season after posting a 3.87 GPA. The Red Storm was tabbed an ITA All-Academic Team and reached the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals for the 11th straight season.
The volleyball squad led by Head Coach Joanne Persico finished atop the league in the classroom for the second consecutive year, logging a 3.73 GPA. The Red Storm also earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 13th consecutive season.
