QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team is more than half way through its spring schedule and will host Villanova Sunday afternoon in BIG EAST action. Recently, junior Alison Adamski checked in with www.RedStormSports.com to answer some questions about herself, the team and the season so far.
RedStormSports.com: What is your favorite sport to play other than tennis?
Alison Adamski: Basketball. I played from the third through eighth grade and then I quit everything (soccer, swimming, softball) to see if I really wanted to continue playing tennis through college.
RSS: What do you love about playing tennis?
AA: The competitiveness and the teamwork, especially against West Virginia this season. My match was the deciding match. Everyone was so loud and the girl was in my face and I was right back in her face. It was intense and I love intensity.
RSS: What is your most memorable moment playing tennis at St. John's?
AA: The Bucknell Tournament this fall. Our whole team made it to the final rounds of their respective brackets and we ended up playing each other. For everyone it has to be one of the most memorable moments, and, of course, beating West Virginia. I've never had so much pressure on me before and I was glad to pull it off for the team.
RSS: Has there been an embarrassing moment?
AA: No, I can't think of an embarrassing moment but we have a lot of funny moments. When we drove to Penn State, we watched The Notebook and there was about an hour left of it when we had arrived at the hotel. So we just parked the van outside the hotel and did not get out of the van until the movie was over. We were all crowded around one laptop, sobbing outside of the hotel for an hour. I think that was when the team finally bonded, and we're working really well together and it is great.
RSS: Who on the team makes you laugh the most?
AA: [Ashley] Harper and B [Barbora Blahutiakova] are really funny.
RSS: You're originally from Queens, why did you decide to come back to the area?
AA: There was more of a support system here for tennis than at Connecticut. Also, there are a lot more people around here that I know play tennis, so there are a lot more connections. I was also thinking about after graduation and being close to New York City is a great opportunity to find a job.
RSS: What's your favorite food?
AA: Italian. Chicken parmesan.
RSS: What is your favorite movie?
AA: The Notebook. I may look tough but I'm a mush.
RSS: What is your favorite place to eat around campus?
AA: I'm not sure of the name but there is a pizzeria in Fresh Meadows near 67th Ave. They have amazing food and no one really knows about it.
RSS: If you were given a free round-trip ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
AA: Europe. I've never been out of the country and I would love to travel around Europe. I hear the lifestyle is pretty different and I would like to experience that.
RSS: How would your teammates describe you in one word?
AA: Caring or responsible. I'm always planning team dinners. I love to cook chicken stir fry, it's my specialty.
RSS: If you could play tennis against anyone, who would it be and why?
AA: Jennifer Capriati. I would actually just like to sit down and talk to her. I have so many questions I would ask about how to get through things. She has been through so much, has experienced a lot of adversity, and has proved people wrong.
RSS: Do you have a favorite quote?
AA: "Life is too short to be anything but happy." I'm not sure what it is from but to me it means do things that make you happy and that can make other people happy, and don't dwell on the past, just concentrate on doing well in the future.
