QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm baseball team recently held its annual alumni weekend. This year's event featured golf, a reception, an alumni game and an intrasquad scrimmage.
The weekend's festivities began with a golf tournament held at North Shore Towers Country Club. Awards were presented to the winner of the longst drive competition and to the team with the lowest score. Mike Fahid was the winner of the longest drive competition, while Kevin McGerry, Chris Fallon and Eugene Orsagno combined to win the team competition. That night, over 50 alums arrived at the Sly Fox Inn for the alumni reception. Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer opened the evening with some remarks and thanked the baseball family for its continued support of the program.
On the following day, the alumni game brought 20 alums onto the field for a three inning game that saw the Red squad defeat the White squad by a 5-1 score. Gary Villacres was named the inaugural Alumni Game MVP for his efforts. Villacres went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, an RBI and a stolen base to lead the Red team. Also for team Red, Brendan Monaghan was 1-for-2 with a triple that brought in the first two runs of the game. James Lally was 1-for-1 with a double for the White team. Also for the white team, Reinhard Greismer was 1-for-2 with an RBI single that brought in Lally.
Following lunch provided by Sabatino's, the 2008 baseball squad took to the field for an intrasquad scrimmage that wrapped up the weekend's events.
The baseball season gets under way on February 22 as the Red Storm takes on Gardner Webb. The team's first home game is against Long Island University on March 12.
